Introduction

In our fast-paced world, patience is a virtue that gets overlooked often or undervalued. As followers of Christ, practicing patience is not an option. It's an essential component of our spiritual growth. The fruit of the Spirit, as mentioned in the above verse’s version as “longsuffering” as one of its core elements. Patience isn’t about suffering for the sake of suffering, but it does naturally go against our nature. When we have the fruit of the Spirit known as Patience, it helps us navigate challenges that we come across. It also helps us create deeper relationships with one another, but more importantly it reflects the character of Christ. We are going to explore together the nature of Patience and how patience affects our relationships with others and ultimately with God.

"And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope." - Romans 5:3-4 (KJV)

Admittedly, patience isn't really something that comes naturally to most of us. It is often developed through the refining process of enduring tribulations and hardships. When we are faced these, we must make a choice – to become bitter and resentful, or to embrace the opportunity for growth. Patience is birthed out of perseverance. As we continue to trust in God and remain faithful during the difficult times, our character is shaped. Not only that, but our patience increases too! Each trial that we overcome adds to our reservoir of experience. This in turn fosters hope. Through patience, we learn to rely on God’s promises and have the confidence in His faithfulness to carry us through any situation in life.

Real-life Application: Embrace the trials or difficulties that you face as opportunities to develop patience. By making this a learned lesson while you endure through these hardships, you can promote patience within your character. Ultimately this allows more trust in God's timing and remaining steadfast in your faith.

"With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love." - Ephesians 4:2 (KJV)

Practicing patience in our relationships is vital for fostering love, unity, and understanding one another. We live in a world of “instant gratification” looking for quick answers or solutions. This means that patience stands out almost as a counter-cultural virtue. Patience calls us to extend grace and compassion to others, especially in moments of disagreements or conflicts. It prompts us to have to listen carefully, seeking to understand perspectives or feelings of those that are around us. Also, the fruit of the Spirit in the form of Patience encourages us to hold back and think before we speak. To choose kindness over harshness. To offer forgiveness instead of holding onto a grudge. Exercising patience in our relationships gives us the opportunity to reflect God’s love and gentleness, fostering an atmosphere of peace and unity.

Real-life Application: Practicing patience in your interactions with others. Especially be aware of this in moments of disagreement or conflict. By choosing to respond with patience, you can foster understanding, promote forgiveness, and nurture healthy relationships. This is reflecting God's love and grace which we all should do as Christians.

"Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." - Psalm 27:14 (KJV)

Our relationship with God requires patience. There is a saying that God has three answers to prayers: Yes, No, and Wait. The last one is the most difficult. When we pray fervently for answers, seek guidance, or wait for doors to open, it seems like God is silent or moving at a different pace than we desire. Remember, God’s timing is perfect. Ours, not so much. Patience in our relationship with Him involves trusting His faithfulness and surrendering our desires and plans to His sovereign will. What God does is always for the ultimate good. Waiting causes our faith to be refined and strengthened as we learn to depend on Him and His wisdom. Patience allows us to align with God’s timeline, not trying to force our own agenda. Waiting WITH, not on, the Lord, provides the strength we need to endure, the clarity that we seek, and blessings that will surpass our expectations.

Real-life Application: Develop patience in your walk with God by trusting in His timing and His plans for your life. Do this through prayer, meditation, and studying His Word. This way you can learn to rely on His faithfulness, surrendering your desires and embracing His perfect will.
