"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

Introduction

As followers of Christ, it is our duty to bear fruits in our lives that mirror the divine nature of God. The fruit that I am talking about today is Joy, and it serves as clear evidence of God's presence in our lives. Joy is not merely a fleeting emotion; it is a state of being that is achieved by nurturing a deep connection with Christ. We are going to dig deep into the roots of Joy, and explore how to join with the fruit of the Spirit. We will also look into the impact that Joy being a fruit of the Spirit can have on our lives, and the world at large.

The Source of Joy

"These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full." - John 15:11 (KJV)

As Christians, we know that the root of true joy comes from Christ alone. He Himself spoke about joy in the Gospel of John, instructing His disciples to abide in Him to bear much fruit. One of these fruits is Joy, and by abiding in Him, we can experience the fullness of it. In fact, Jesus tells us that by doing this, His joy will be in us, making our joy complete. To get the full picture of what I am saying, read the first 11 verses of John 15. This is where Jesus speaks about the importance of abiding in Him to bear fruit.

You may be wondering, "What does this mean?" It means that by having a deep relationship with Christ and bearing fruit for His kingdom, you can tap into the source of all joy. Jesus wants us to experience this joy that comes from dwelling in Him.

Real-Life Application: To experience the Source of Joy, start by living in Christ through prayer, worship, and reading the Bible. Make this daily, or even better multiple times throughout the day. Create time for Him in your life, and let His joy fill you up. The key is to intentionally embrace a deep relationship with Him.

Cultivating Joy
A man overworked and surrounded by notes on his desk and wall.

"Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls." - 1 Peter 1:8-9 (KJV)

When it comes to cultivating Joy as a fruit of the Spirit, the first thing we have to do is understand that it is not always easy. Especially since we live in a world filled with anxiety and suffering. So, how do we start? Well, it begins with prioritizing our relationship with God through spiritual disciplines such as prayer, worship, and reading the Bible. It is not enough to be engaging in these practices, but you have to place God first over any distractions. This is how to tap into God's presence, feel His love, and encounter His Joy. In one of his letters, Peter writes to a group of believers who are facing persecution and suffering. Peter could have just said to "grin and bear it", but he reminds them that salvation has already received through their faith in Jesus Christ. Peter notes that their belief in Christ has led to an inexpressible and glorious Joy, which is the fruit of the Spirit that is rooted in their assurance of salvation through Christ.

Real-Life Application: Prioritizing your relationship with God through spiritual disciplines means scheduling it until it becomes habit. Set an alarm to remind you to pray at a certain time, or so you can schedule time to read the Bible. After a few weeks (normally three) you will see them become a Joyful routine that you look forward doing rather than being reminded of doing. These practices help us tap into God's presence and experience His love and joy. Just remember it takes intentional effort to make room for joy in our lives and to make it a habit.

The Impact of Joy

"Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation." - Habakkuk 3:18

When it comes to Joy, its impact is undeniable. Joy has the power to lift our spirits and brighten our outlook on life. Joy as a fruit of the Spirit doesn’t just affect us internally but it brings hope to those around us. In case you didn't figure it out, joy is contagious. We being God's vessels of grace and mercy, we can make a positive impact on everyone in the world around us with this fruit of the Spirit.

In the verse above Habakkuk's words are a powerful reminder that joy is not dependent on our circumstances. Even when everything feels like it is falling apart, we can still find joy in God our Savior. Don't ignore all the pain and suffering in the world. Instead, choose to find joy and hope in the midst of it. By connecting with joy in our lives, we bring a sense of peace and comfort to those around us. Help them see that there is still beauty and goodness in the world, even in the midst of their difficulties.

Real-Life Application: To make an impact with your joy, reflect your love for God to those around you. Understand that others are image-bearers of God just as you are. Honor God’s creation and be a light in the darkness. Show others the hope and joy that come from Him. By bearing the fruit of the Spirit of Joy, you become an inspiration for others to seek God and experience His love and joy in their own lives. This joy not only impacts you, but it becomes a domino effect that continues to spread.

In summary, joy is one of the most powerful fruits of the Spirit that demonstrates God's presence in our lives. We can find joy in Christ by building a close relationship with Him and seeking joy through spiritual disciplines like prayer, worship, and Bible study. Spread joy to those around you. You can uplift and inspire others to experience the love and joy of God themselves. So, let us always choose to rejoice in the Lord, even in the toughest times, and find our joy in God our Savior.
