"Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." - Proverbs 31:28 (KJV)
Introduction
Mother’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated world-wide but isn’t really an international day, or even have a standard date in the countries that celebrate it. Here in America, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. Is it a Christian holiday? No. Can Christians celebrate the holiday? We better! Mother’s Day is when Moms are honored and appreciated for being the remarkable women in our lives that have embraced the calling of motherhood. Are we supposed to honor them only on this day? No again, duh. As Christians, it is essential for us to celebrate Mother’s Day with a focus on gratitude, love and biblical principles. If we recognize the significance of motherhood through a biblical lens, we understand the selfless love and sacrifices that mothers make on a daily basis. I am going to go over three ways in which Christians can celebrate Mother’s Day and express gratitude for the godly women in our lives.
Honoring Mothers as God's Precious Gift
"Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward." - Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
Motherhood without a doubt is a divine blessing that is bestowed only on women by God. The above verse reminds us that children are a precious gift from the Lord, and it emphasizes the divine nature of motherhood. Just as children are a precious gift, so are mothers a gift from our Heavenly Father. Honoring the role mothers play in our lives, whether it is them nurturing, guiding, or the unconditional love they give should not be regulated to the second Sunday in May but EVERY DAY of the year. Recognizing mothers as a blessing from God is a way, we can honor them with genuine appreciation and love.
Embracing the Legacy of Faithful Mothers
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." - Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
I put this verse in here mainly because it is one of my favorites. Why? Because it tells Christians what to do to make the world better. Mothers are critical in shaping the faith of their children. So that means that mothers get to make the world better! We as Christians should be celebrating the influence of all the godly mothers we have had in our lives and not just focusing on the one we are related to. Which reminds me, there are many different mothers out there. Biological, Step-Mom, Foster Mothers, Adoptive Mothers and there are some that have had their Grandmothers raise them. These women impart their spiritual values on their children. Hopefully we can continue teaching in the ways of the Lord by nurturing a deep, lasting relationship with God to our children.
Serving and Supporting Mothers in Need
"Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." - Galatians 6:2 (KJV)
Life is hard. Motherhood comes with additional challenges and hardships. The above verse encourages us to do what we as Christians should be doing. We are called to support and uplift others, like mothers, who may be facing difficulties or feeling overwhelmed. Extend a helping hand, offer encouragement, provide practical assistance. This is how we demonstrate the love of Christ and make a difference in the lives of these mothers.
Conclusion
Mother’s Day is the perfect time for Christians to express gratitude and honor the legacy of faithful mothers. Extend love and support to those in need. Embrace biblical principles of honoring, appreciating, and serving mothers. This is creating a meaningful and God-honoring celebration. Make sure you re-read the top verse in this article. Don’t just read it, absorb it and realize what it means. Personally, my mother has passed and is with the Lord now, and that doesn’t stop my honoring her and loving her. It is my memories of her that make me understand how my child looks at my wife with the love that a child has for their mother. It is truly a stunning sight when you take it in. May your Mother’s Day reflect the love and reverence you have for the extraordinary women who have embraced the beautiful journey of motherhood.
