"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

Introduction

It can easily be said that Love is the foundation of all Christian virtues and values. In fact, it is the fruit of the Spirit that sets the stage for all other fruits to grow! When we take the time to show love to others, we are showing the world the very character of God. Below we are going to explore together the depth of love as the greatest commandment and how we can apply it in our daily lives starting today.

First things first, remember that Love is not a feeling, but rather it is a choice. It is a decision to put the needs of others before our own, to seek their good, and to treat them with kindness and respect. Love is sacrificial, it is forgiving, and its patient. When we love others, we reflect the very character of God.

Love as the Foundation

"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God." - 1 John 4:7 (KJV)

Yes, Love is the foundation, and yes, it is the fruit of the Spirit that sets the stage for all other fruits to grow. You see, we cannot have Joy, Peace, or Patience, if we do not have Love. God’s love for us is not conditional, but unconditional. So, we cannot just arbitrarily feel love towards others but choose that selfless love, the one that seeks the good of others.

Real-Life Application: We can cultivate love in our lives daily. To do this, we need to be seeking to understand others, meaning that we take the time to invest knowing them. This can be done by being patient with them, and serving with kindness.

Loving Our Neighbors
Man and woman neighbor talking to each other showing thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Matthew 22:37 - 39

Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” – Matthew 22:37-39 (KJV)

Love has different meanings in the original text of the Bible, and loving the brethren is different than loving our neighbors, but that is another blog for another time. Loving our neighbors is a fundamental commandment of God. We are called to love them as we love ourselves, which means seeing them as equals and treating them with kindness, respect, and generosity. God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves because every human being is created in the image of God. When we love our neighbors, we are showing them the very love of God, all while glorifying Him.

Real-Life Application: We can show love to our neighbors by being a good listener, helping them when they are in need, and being a positive influence in their lives.

Loving Our Enemies
Two rival gang leaders realizing that you should love your enemies like in Matthew 5:44.

"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;" - Matthew 5:44 (KJV)

Loving our enemies could perhaps be the most challenging commandment of all. Of course, it's easy to love those who love us, but it takes a special kind of love to love our enemies. We live in a very devisive world where many want to label and demonize at first glance, and when we love our enemies, we are reflecting the love of Christ. He loved those who crucified Him. He did not see them as enemies, rather he saw them as children of God who needed mercy. This kind of love is not based on feelings, but on our choice to obey God's commandments.

Real-Life Application: We can love our enemies by praying for them, seeking to understand their perspective, and showing them kindness even when they could be deemed undeserving of it.

Conclusion
Christian community working together showing how to follow the commandment love your neighbors.

When we explore the depth of love as the greatest commandment, we discover in ourselves that it's not just a feeling, but a choice. Love is a decision where we put the needs of others before our own, to seek their good, and to treat them with kindness and respect. Love is sacrificial, forgiving, and patient. When we decide to love others, we then begin to reflect the very character of God. As we apply the commandment to love in our daily lives, we can show the world the love of Christ and make a positive impact on those around us.
